His main areas of interest in liver transplantation include transplantation in complex circumstances, the use of extended criteria donors, surgical innovation (liver splitting, segmental grafts, live donor liver transplantation), use of machine perfusion in preservation of donor livers and paediatric transplantation (liver, intestine, multivisceral).
In the field of HPB surgery his interest lies in major liver and pancreatic resectional surgery for primary and secondary cancer, surgery for portal hypertension including shunt surgery in both adults and children, post cholecystectomy bile duct injuries and strictures, and paediatric liver and pancreatic resections.
He was Clinical Service Lead (CSL) for Liver Surgery in Birmingham overseeing a team of 11 Consultant Surgeons from 2012-2014, working across two sites. In 2013, he was appointed to an Honorary Chair in Hepatobiliary Surgery and Transplantation by the University of Birmingham. He was appointed Clinical Academic Lead for Transplantation at the Institute for Translational Medicine, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham in 2015. He has recently (2015) been elected the founding Chair of the British Liver Transplant Group (BLTG).
During his 25+ years career in HPB surgery and transplantation, he has contributed to several learned society committees and NHSBT offices including: Liver Advisory Group to NHS Blood and Transplant, the founding chair of the Liver Intestine Subgroup and the founding Chair of the Bowel Advisory Group (BAG) to NHS Blood and Transplant (2010-15). He was also the Lead Cancer Clinician for HPB surgery from 2009-2016, set up and chaired the West Midlands supra regional HPB Cancer Network from 2004-2010. He was also elected for a term as Secretary of the European Liver and Intestinal Transplant Association (ELITA/ESOT) in 2003 and co-organised the 13th Intestinal Transplant Association symposium in Oxford (2013).
His return to Mumbai, the city of his childhood, after 25 years is driven by the opportunity to develop a world class HPB and Transplant facility for both adults and children with liver and pancreatic disease at Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai.

Professor Darius F Mirza, MS, DSS, FRCS Ed, FRCS Glasgow, is a Consultant HPB and Multi-Organ Transplant Lead at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai.
He is one of the most experienced Hepato Pancreato Biliary and Transplant surgeons in the UK, having been involved with complex liver, pancreas, bile duct and transplantation surgery since 1986.
After basic training in Bombay, he obtained lengthy training in HPB surgery, liver and renal transplantation at the University Hospital Vienna, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and the Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
He was appointed Consultant HPB and Transplant Surgeon in 1996 and has worked for almost 25 years at the leading Liver and HPB Unit in Europe, a centre that has performed almost 5000 liver transplants, 2500 liver resections and 1400 pancreatic resections in adults and children. He has a strong academic record with over 270 published Medline/pub Med articles and over 25 book chapters.
